Return of the Special One

Albion fans rejoice. Seven years after leaving, Micky Adams has been given the chance to continue what he started.

The man responsible for returning success to the club will, if all goes well, lead them into the promised land that is Falmer with the team back in the Championship.

Re-wind to April 1999, on the first day of his first spell in charge of the Seagulls. Adams was paraded in a pro-Falmer T-shirt at Hove Town Hall as plans for the new stadium were unveiled.

Two and a half years later when Leicester, then in the Premiership, wanted him to become Dave Bassett's No. 2, it was too good an opportunity to turn down.

Falmer was still a million miles away and Adams could not afford to wait. He had to capitalise on his success with Albion.

Nobody blamed him, not chairman Dick Knight or an adoring fan base. It was not so much a divorce as an amicable split.

Friendships forged during Adams' glorious stint on the South Coast have endured and now the feisty little Yorkshireman is the right man in the right place at the right time.

On the face of it, Dean Wilkins has been harshly removed from his post after only 20 months at the helm, having just guided Albion into seventh place in League One in his first full season.

Flirting with the play-offs was a vast improvement on last year's poor showing, when the Seagulls were almost sucked in to a relegation battle. The bald statistics, as some of us have appreciated for some time, do not tell the whole story.

Wilkins is a brilliant, innovative coach. His fine work over a long period as youth coach, nurturing current first team regulars like Tommy Elphick, Dean Cox and Joel Lynch, won him many friends in high places within the club.

He was briefly promoted to first team coach two summers ago to placate major shareholder Tony Bloom, when Bloom launched a bid to oust Wilkins' managerial predecessor Mark McGhee following relegation from the Championship.

Wilkins, with no managerial experience, was thrown in at the deep end a couple of months later after McGhee was sacked.

The job title has always sat uncomfortably. Being manager is a much more wide-ranging role than coach, which plays to Wilkins' strengths - out on the training ground working with the players and talking tactics. Even experienced pros have learnt from him.

He has struggled with other aspects of the role, such as dealing with players and their agents in contract negotiations, player recruitment and the media.

He has been a square peg in a round hole. Becoming coach again makes the peg round.

We must all hope that, once the understandable hurt and anger subsides, he says yes' to the challenge. Knight wants him to stay, so does Adams.

At this difficult time for him, Wilkins can take a lead from Martin Hinshelwood, who worked alongside him for many years as director of youth. Hinshelwood became manager for a very brief spell. He is still at the club, continuing his good work as director of football.

Meanwhile, Adams will immediately set about the task of restoring Albion to the Championship. A lot of water has gone under the bridge since he was last here and it will not be easy.

Sceptics will point to the old adage that you should never go back and refer to Alan Mullery's unhappy second stint at the club.

That was different. When Mullery returned Albion were on a downward spiral. Adams rejoins with the Seagulls in a healthier state than when he launched their renaissance.

There are plenty of examples, too, of managers thriving second time around. One of them is very fresh and poignant.

Adams has been scouting for the last few months for my beloved Stoke City. Tony Pulis, in his second stint in charge, has just guided them back into the top flight of English football after a 23-year gap.

After they were promoted on Sunday I sent Adams a text. It said that Stoke must have a great scouting network. "You are not wrong," he replied with his mischievous sense of humour.

Little did I know that our occasional conversations are about to become much more regular again.

It was a bumpy ride for a while first time around but he knows his stuff, knows what management is all about after a dozen years worth of experience with seven different clubs.

On behalf of Albion fans, Micky, welcome back.

Welcome Back Micky. Wonderful news for Brighton & Hove Albion. This makes up for the awful sacking of Mark McGhee.

Is this THE second coming?!!

I may have missed it but there seems to be no mention of Magoo in the article. What was Mr Naylor thinking?!
Posted by: Not Magoo, Jockoland on 12:15am Fri 9 May 08
Yes, Magoo was mentioned. Thought it was too good to be true. Surprised he didn't get the golf in there too.

i am a micky adams fan and so am happy to see him back at the club but am disgusted that dean wilkins has been sacked. there is no doubt that with a little more money dean would have taken us up next season. this is a bold move by the club but im not sure it is the right one.

Welcome back Mickey & I hope Deano stays as coach.

Mickey Adams Blue & White Army!

It's a brilliant move. We have a proper manager again for the first time in 20 months rather than some rabbit in the headlights. I hope Micky is given the chance to pick his own No2.

What a disgrace- Dean has done a great job

Dick Knight should be dismissed

I'm struggling to come to terms with all of this...

I hope this isn't going to be a farce that leads us all to wonder why in 6 months time.

Not 100% convinced that Mickey, without his lower league favourites, can do it again.

Its a bold move Dick that i feel could be the start of the end for you.

Finally sorry Deano you deserved better than this and i hope you stay on.

Anyway, whats done is done so come on you seagulls!

I'm tempted to think that anything which pleases Naylor MUST be wrong. Let's hope the Argus realises that the majority of readers are sick to death of that self-congratulatory stoke fan.

As someone else says i hope dean swallows his pride and accepts the coach role back. It is a bit harsh but the right decision for the future of the club in my book. Dean did a fantastic job this season, but the stuff over christmas time left the feeling of a club clinging on and whether paul reid's comments were fair or not there was clearly some unrest. Time to move on for the best of the club.

Have to say when i first saw article, i thought it was a joke. I just hope that we still go after Richards and Westy. They have been two big players these last few months. Gd Luck Micky.

Great news for the Albion, a big thank you to Dean Wilkins for his tremendous efforts over the past couple of seasons, let's hope he stays he is a great coach!

MA is a top capture for us, well done DK.

Season ticket sales WILL increase, I'm sure and hopefully some players will return to the fold and MA will use his network buy or loan the sort of players we've been lacking.

I guess you can only end in KEEP THE FAITH!

Brilliant news, always have been a fan of Mickey Adams, but i am disapointed with the sacking of Deano, he didnt deserve that as he did a brilliant job, i hope Micky gets us where i thought Wilko was going to take us next season

If Wilkins stays, I'd give it 3 months tops. A disaster waiting to happen.

Good appointment but i think Dean Wilkins has been harshly treated. This must have been on the cards since we missed out on the playoffs. I hope he stays cause he is an excellent coach. Hopefully MA is here for the long haul now that we have got falmer. He has two years to get us in the championship and keep us there !
Posted by: Ryan, brighton on 2:25pm Fri 9 May 08
Absolutely disgraceful! Wilko is the best manager we have had in a long long time. What he has achieved with a joke of a chairman is fantastic, if only everybody knew what an awful chairman Dick is. Sells our captain, refuses to gve the club money for players we need, he only ever spends the dough that comes in from player sales. DICK OUT!!! Make sure we hold onto one of the best coaches in the game!

I am gutted for Wilkins, obviously he had his down sides but the end result was 7th place. I doubted him for a while but he won me round. I do think it is ironic that so many posts on here are saying how unfair and disgraceful it is about the way Wilkins has been treated. Yet a few weeks ago after a shocking result against Vale, people were abusing him, swearing at him and calling him everything under the sun except a great manager. fickle?
Adams is a Great signing to move the club on, Wilkins please stay and continue your excellent work with the club where you belong.
Posted by: James, Brighton on 3:26pm Fri 9 May 08
i feel sorry for wilkins because for the little managerial experience he has along with the facilities he has to work with day in and day out, he has done a good job as manager however it is great to see micky adams back as manager and i hope that adams along with wilkins and the rest of the coaching staff and players can lead back into the championship.

I feel sorry for DW, but I do think that the writing was on the wall after the Christmas and January problems and the public airing of the clubs laundry. DW is a great coach, FACT. He is not a great man manager, and I have seen this many times in other jobs where somebody who excels in their job is promoted away from what they do best. Please stay Dean and do what you do best.
I am pleased Adams is back and I am considering a Season ticket now.....

Wilkins will probably tell the club to go and **** itself, and rightly so.I hope this ain't no false dawn.
Posted by: Graham, Shoreham on 12:16am Sat 10 May 08
How many managers is that now for DK? Lets get Falmer built, let Dick sell out when he's got a chance of earning a substantial sum - which he deserves. Then get a chairman who understands that a club needs stability and unity - and that the manager and only the manager calls the footballing shots!
Posted by: John, brighton on 12:42am Sat 10 May 08
Have to say Dean Wilkins must still be looking for his teeth that dick knight has kicked out. Think he has been treated appalingly and he should tell the club where they can shove their offer. The team had made huge progress this season and I have no doubt we would have finished top 6 next season anyway. Nice to have Micky back, but not at the expense of Dean Wilkins.
