Eastburne B 2, Braintree 0..

Eastbourne Borough gained some revenge for their loss to Braintree in the final game of last season as they ran out 2-0 winners at Priory Lane.

Garry Wilson's side got off to the best possible start with as they went ahead after just 38 seconds.

Braintree's defence was slow to react to a throw-in and Matt Crabb swivelled to hit a low shot under Nick Morgan.

Matt Crabb was involved in much of Borough's best early moves. His curling effort from a swift counter went just wide and then his flick set up Scott Ramsay whose fierce first time strike cannoned back off the inside of a post.

Borough added a second on 38 minutes when Ramsay was fouled on the edge of the box and Paul Armstrong fired home a well-struck free-kick.

Borough were not incisive in the second half but Braintree could not penetrate a solid home defence.

The closest they came was an Ian Cousins header on 73 minutes which came back off the bar with goalkeeper Lee Hook beaten.

New signing Matt Groves was left on the bench for Lewes, who were denied early on when Saints keeper Nicky Eyre saved bravely at the feet of Andy Drury.

Moments later top scorer Paul Booth found himself clean through but again Eyre spread himself well to save.

The hosts almost went ahead just before half-time but Lewes goalkeeper Steve Williams saved well from Danny Morgan.

Jamie Cade and Booth went close in the second half before Saints went ahead on 78 minutes through Morgan.

But Booth secured a point for Lewes three minutes later with his ninth goal of the season.
