Dermot Drummy will do it the Arsenal and Chelsea way in pre-season.

The Crawley head coach has had the balls out from day one as his side prepare for the League Two season.

He has followed the example of bosses he worked with at the two big London clubs rather than what he was put through as a player.

Drummy told The Argus: “I’ve come through with Wenger, Ancelotti, Mourinho, Villas Boas and we’ve done that system.

“When I was a player, we ran cross-country. We ran and ran and we didn’t see the ball for a while.

“Here, we do pre-season on the pitch. That is just a personal preference.

“I heard a German coach once say the players loved to go on a run after training. The game is constantly evolving. We have to stay in front so we are always open to ideas.”

Drummy expects his side to be razor sharp for the new campaign.

They kick off their pre-season programme when they take on Ryman south outfit East Grinstead next Saturday (3pm).

He added: “The hardest part of our game is off the ball. If we are high-pressing, which we will be at times, it will be tough on the players to get the ball back.

“We hope to keep the ball but I would be disappointed if we flag during a game.

“Our training is game-based.We train to play the way we play which is very important.”

Meanwhile midfielder Simon Walton has left Crawley after the club terminated his contract.

Drummy made it clear the 28-year-old was not part of his plans for next season when he took over from Mark Yates in April.

Walton – who scored four goals in 38 appearances for Reds after joining from Stevenage 12 months ago – had a year left on his contract and has agreed a settlement with the club.

Drummy said: “I had a chat with Simon earlier this week and we mutually agreed for him to leave the club.

“We thank him for his services and wish him all the very best for the future.”
