Sussex are facing another fourth-day battle to salvage a draw after Surrey built a lead in their Championship tussle at Arundel.
The visitors were 362-6 at the close of the third day, a lead of 67.
They look to be the only team with a chance of forcing a win on the final day on a slow wicket at the Castle Ground.
Sussex, bowled out for 295 yesterday, had their visitors 113-3 when Ricky Ponting was out for 13.
But Vikram Solanki made a brilliant 130 and Zander de Bruyn is 99 not out overnight.
The pair added 177 for the fourth wicket.
Monty Panesar has taken 3-104 but Sussex will need to show the same resolve as on the fourth day at Lord’s last Saturday when they forced a draw against Middlesex.
