Sharks facing early exit in t20 after more final over pain

Sussex's slim hopes of reaching the knock-out stages of the FL t20 were completely extinguished as they suffered another defeat in the final over against Essex.

Matt Machan scored 57 and Rory Hamilton-Brown 43 as the Sharks posted a total of 171-9 from their 20 over at Chelmsford.

Owais Shah (40) and Ravi Bopara (35) kept Essex on course for their target before Ryan ten Doeschate (42 from 26 balls) and James Foster (27 from 15) finished the job.

It is Sussex's fifth defeat in six games in the competition - with all of them coming in the final over - and leaves them second from bottom in the South Group.

Machan continued his fine form as he scored a career best t20 score from just 30 balls, including eight fours and one six. The Scotland international put on 62 from 45 balls for the second wicket with Hamilton-Brown before his departure saw Sussex lose all momentum.

Shaun Tait picked up the wickets of Chris Nash, Scott Styris and Joe Gatting - in for the injured Luke Wright - in quick succession on his way to figures of 4-26.

A total of 171 was always going to be difficult to defend at Chelmsford but Chris Jordan gave Sussex hope by removing both openers Hamish Rutherford and Greg Smith.

Shah and Bopara added 56 for the third wicket before Foster and ten Doeschate picked up the challenge with Essex still needing 51 from the last five overs.

Jordan's penultimate over cost 17, however, and despite a good final over from Chris Liddle - the 19th - Essex were left needing just six from the last over which they managed with four balls to spare.

Extremely disappointing again,we get off to good starts then fold. Nash captaincy in this competition has been found wanting especially with the bowling changes and failure in past matches to fully use Yardy. Would like to have seen Joyce return and think Yardy is far better T20 captain than Nash. Also why change himself to bat number 4,a lack of confidence perhaps. I now expect Sussex to win all 4 remaining matches but of course its all too late now.
And finally can someone tell me the point of Gatting, awful batting average, doesnt bowl and although a good fielder just not up to professional cricket, had several seasons with us,time to offload.
Lets win the Championship now.

I think Nash's move to #4 was because he knew the competition was over and wanted to try different combinations. Machan looked very useful again - a bright prospect indeed, even though he looks about 12 :-)

Essex kindly gave us 12 bonus runs due to their slow over rate, but we still lost. Last year we won 6 out of 7 completed matches in our 20/20 group. This year to date we have lost 5 out of 6 with much the same team. Figures suggest that Jordan needs to bowl in the first 12 overs and Liddle in the last 12 overs. There seems to be no pattern to the bowling attack. Is a name drawn out of a cap at the end of each over?We need our best bowlers in the team and Joyce if we are to improve our performances.

attn. no balls
they also gave us 12 wides which slowed their over rate.Dwayne Smith unfortunately is a bit of a liability with the ball and his batting has not been too clever. Hope we get Styris back again.

Not many people are good enough at both football and cricket these days to play for the Albion and Sussex CCC.

Unfortunately for Joe, he was just below the level required to become an Albion regular and despite being a terrific fielder, it's the same case with Sussex.

A fine all-round sportsman but not a great one.

Totally agree with No Balls. We did win the group last year. This year we are playing the same teams and we've won 1 out of 6. On paper we have a very stronge and better team this year but we seem clueless on the field. We seem to have no idea at all how to bat or bowl at the end of a T20 innings. I believe Joyce should have been playing - he is not a hitter but he knows how to play and he is a good captain and sadly Nash's captaincy has been very poor. Letting Smith bowl to Carberry in a Powerplay at Southampton was the worst piece of captaincy I've seen from a Sussex captain for many years (and that includes Goodwin's infamous declaration at Worcester in 2010). And Gatting must surely be most of the way through the exit door.

Very disappointing that we've been so poor in both short-format competitions this year. I just have to see a Sussex T20 thread on NSC to know that it's a case of 'were loose'

Ideally I think we could have done with a Rana or Arafat when they were at their best rather than Smith. We need an overseas bowler who can bat and is good at the 'death'. Appreciate that there were limited options at a late stage after Hastings pulled out.

It's easy to be too critical - we have been spoilt by the team's performances over the last few seasons. I like a lot of the signings the club has made and it's going to be an exciting finish to the championship season. Give a few fringe players a chance tomorrow night and rest vital players for the championship game that starts the following day.

Having payed almost £400 on shark memberships for me and my kids, it's pretty gauling to be out with three games at home to come.

Seems little point in going to be honest now which is very disappointing.

Smith poor for me. Yardy has had great season. Getting shoud not be playing at this level. Beer also out of his depth. Nash not up to the captaincy at t20.

That said, all pretty close games that could have gone either way. We have performed under par to previous years sadly 😞
