A brutal innings from Luke Wright put Sussex on top after the first day of their County Championship clash with champions Durham at Hove.

Wright smashed an unbeaten 74 off just 60 balls in a partnership of 96 with Ben Brown to guide Sussex to 186-5 at the close after they had collapsed to 90-5.

That gave them a lead of 22 after Chris Jordan and James Anyon had ripped through the Durham batting earlier in the day.

Anyon claimed his first five-wicket haul of the season with figures of 5-44 while Jordan bowled superbly to take 4-50 as Durham were dismissed for just 164.

Durham skipper Paul Collingwood won the toss and elected to bat first which was a bit of a surprise considering no team had won at Hove batting first for two years.

Sussex made the decision look an even odder one when they removed Keaton Jennings and Mark Stoneman in the morning session to leave Durham 38-2.

Jennings edged Jordan to Prior at first slip while Stoneman was caught behind off Anyon having passed 1,000 runs in the Championship for the season.

Scott Borthwick and Will Smith guided Durham to 75-2 at lunch with Borthwick also reaching 1,000 Championship runs in the process.

Sussex took control of the game in the afternoon with Jordan and Anyon ripping through the Durham batting, the visitors losing their last seven wickets for 57 runs.

Borthwick edged Jordan to Joyce at third slip having made 36 and also claimed the wickets of Ben Stokes and Smith in a genuinely quick spell.

Anyon then joined the party as he picked up three wickets for no runs in the space of six balls. Phil Mustard was caught at first slip by Jordan for five, Michael Richardson was trapped lbw and Usman Ashad was bowled, both without scoring.

Steve Magoffin finally picked up the wicket he deserved by removing Graham Onions with Anyon polishing off the Durham innings but having Paul Collingwood caught on the midwicket boundary.

Sussex’s reply got off to a disastrous start as they lost two wickets in the first three overs with Chris Nash and Mike Yardy both being trapped lbw by Onions for ducks.

Joyce helped to steady the ship as he dominated a 58-run partnership with Luke Wells for the third wicket before being bowled by Arshad for 45.

Prior’s disappointing season with the bat continued as he was caught behind off Arshad for 16 and Wells fell in the next over to Ben Stokes having made 20 off 67 balls to leave the score on 90-5.

At that point Durham harboured hopes of earning a first innings lead but Wright quickly wiped out that prospect.

The England all-rounder raced to his second 50 of the season off just 38 balls, including ten fours and a big six over midwicket off Onions.

He was dropped badly by Stoneman on 57 off the bowling of Chris Rushworth and made Durham pay by moving to 74 at the close with Brown offering good support on 18.
