Tim Linley claimed a five-wicket haul on his Championship debut for Sussex to peg Durham back on the opening day at Arundel Castle.

Linley picked up the scalps of Scott Borthwick, Mark Stoneman and Paul Collingwood in the space of 15 balls in the morning session and added the wickets Ryan Pringle and Paul Coughlin after lunch.

Steve Magoffin and Luke Wells also struck but Gordon Muchall made an unbeaten 60 to help Durham reach tea on 245-8.

Michael Richardson and Muchall had taken their fifth-wicket partnership to 83 before Magoffin made the first breakthrough in the afternoon session.

Richardson was on 46 when he pulled a short ball from Magoffin and was superbly caught by Chris Nash at midwicket.

Linley then struck twice in the space of three balls, bowling Ryan Pringle for five with a ball that kept slightly low and then having Paul Coughlin caught by Mike Yardy at second slip for a duck.

Muchall moved to his 50 from 115 balls and added 36 for the eighth wicket with John Hastings before the Australian fell for 23, top edging Luke Wells to Matt Machan at point.

Linley – who joined on loan from Surrey on Sunday - just needs one more wicket to eclipse his career best haul of 6-57 having removed Scott Borthwick, Michael Stoneman and Paul Collingwood in the morning session.

The 33-year-old’s performance eased the blow of losing Ajmal Shahzad after just eight overs in the morning through injury.

Shahzad had managed just four overs when he left the field of play having been sidelined for the previous five weeks with a torn pectoral muscle.
