Chris Jordan has refused to give up on his Ashes dream despite his hopes of facing Australia being put in jeopardy by injury.

Jordan was omitted from a 14-man pre-Ashes training squad yesterday after suffering a side strain in the second ODI against New Zealand last Friday.

The Sussex seamer is expected to be sidelined for another four weeks meaning he is likely to miss the first two Tests of the five match series against Australia.

Jordan has been a regular in the England side since making his Test debut against Sri Lanka 12 months ago but did not feature in the recent series against New Zealand.

The 26-year-old was overlooked in favour of Mark Wood against the Black Caps while his place in the squad for the four-day training camp in Spain has been taken by Derbyshire bowler Mark Footitt.

Jordan said: “You never want an injury at any time but with the Ashes coming up I was looking forward to hopefully playing a part so it makes it doubly disappointing.

“I grew up watching the Ashes on TV and the last few series have been great to watch so it is something I was quite excited about being involved in.

“I’ve been told I’ll probably be out for four weeks but it is very vague at the moment so I’ve just got to take it a day at a time and see where I am.

“I don’t want to rush back as there is a danger I could aggravate it so I’ll stay patient and hopefully I will still get the opportunity to be involved in the Ashes at some point during the summer.”

Jordan’s injury also means he is unlikely to be available for the majority of Sussex’s remaining NatWest T20 Blast campaign plus the next two County Championship matches.

Sussex slipped to their fifth defeat in their last six Championship matches yesterday when they went down by 178 runs against division one leaders Durham at Arundel.

England training camp squad: Cook (Essex), Ali (Worcestershire), Anderson (Lancashire), Ballance (Yorkshire), Bell (Warwickshire), Broad (Nottinghamshire), Buttler (Lancashire), Finn (Middlesex), Footitt (Derbyshire), Lyth (Yorkshire), Plunkett (Yorkshire), Root (Yorkshire), Stokes (Durham), Wood (Durham).
