Matt Prior is in discussions with Sussex about taking on a coaching role at Hove.

Prior is keen to maintain his links with the county after being forced to retire earlier this summer due to injury.

The former England wicketkeeper launched a professional cycling team last year but is determined to remain involved in cricket.

He has held meetings with Sussex chief executive Zac Toumazi and spoken to head coach Mark Robinson.

Prior, 33, said: “When you finish playing your responsibilities change. My responsibility as a player was to perform on the pitch and help Sussex and England win games.

“That drive to help a team and make it better doesn’t go away but it is off the pitch now where I can make the difference.

"I would love to have some role at Sussex as I feel I could add a huge amount with the experience I have gained over the years.

“As much as I am putting into cycling I don’t want to go away from cricket and Sussex. I think it would be wrong to just finish it and walk away as cricket has been such a massive part of my life since the age of eight.

“Whether it is with Sussex or England in the dressing room I don’t know but all I would say is that I am very keen to do it and am available to do it.

“I have had a couple of conversations with Zac and I spoke to Robbo at the Twenty20 game at Lord’s recently so I am sure over the next few weeks something will be sorted out.

“There is not one specific thing I would like to do but there are a number of options and I am just keen to help in any way I can. Now it is up to Sussex to see if they want me and where I fit in.”
