James Taylor and Chris Read continued to pile on agony for Sussex on the second morning at Horsham.
The pair took their sixth wicket partnership to 269 as Nottinghamshire progressed from 385-5 overnight to 455-5 at lunch.
That eclipsed the previous record stand for Nottinghamshire’s sixth wicket against Sussex of 199 set by Billy Barnes and Harry Daft in 1887.
Taylor brought up his sixth first class double hundred – from 294 balls - by launching spinner Peter Burgoyne for his second six into the tennis courts at the town end.
He will resume after lunch on 225 with his highest first class score of 242 in his sights as he looks to give the England selectors a nudge.
Read has added 84 with neither being duly troubled throughout the morning session despite Steve Magoffin passing the outside edge on a number of occasions.
