Sussex made a solid start in reply to Nottinghamshire’s daunting total of 570-7 declared at Horsham.
Skipper Ed Joyce and Luke Wells guided Sussex to 53-0 at tea after James Taylor’s epic innings had finally been brought to an end.
Taylor’s score of 291 was the fourth highest for Nottinghamshire in first class cricket, the highest against Sussex and the highest for any county at Horsham.
The diminutive batsman was denied a triple hundred when he was superbly caught by Chris Nash at backward point to give the excellent Steve Magoffin the wicket he deserved.
Earlier, Taylor had put on a record partnership of 365 with Chris Read who eventually fell for 121 when he edged Matt Hobden behind.
