England internationals past and present combined to earn Sussex crucial points in their battle for Championship survival.

World Cup winner Mike Yardy made an emotional century against Somerset in his final game at Hove before retiring in the winter.

When Yardy fell for 104 it was left to Chris Jordan – who was recalled to the England T20 side today – to hit a vital 42 to steer Sussex to a total of 409 all out.

That earned Sussex maximum batting points for the third game in a row and ensured they matched fellow strugglers Hampshire who also picked up full bonus points against Yorkshire.

They had further success with the ball as Jordan and Steve Magoffin each picked up a wicket to reduce Somerset to 114-2 at the close.

The only disappointment was that Ashar Zaidi was unable to convert his overnight 90 into a second century of the season as he fell to the seventh ball of the day.

Zaidi – who shared in a partnership of 137 with Yardy to rescue Sussex from 171-6 – was trapped lbw by Jamie Overton with his first ball.

Yardy brought up his 23rd first class century by flicking Tim Groenewald to the fine leg boundary before holing out to the fielder at backward square leg in the next over.

When Magoffin fell for 13 Sussex still required another nine runs to secure their fifth batting point but Jordan did it in style by hitting Overton for four and then pulling him for six.

Jordan was last man out when he top edged Groenewald to give a steepling catch to wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi.

Sussex then made early inroads into the Somerset batting with Tom Abell chopping on a ball from Jordan and then Tom Cooper edging Magoffin behind.

But Marcus Trescothick steered Somerset to the close without further damage with an unbeaten 53 while James Hildreth is 16 not out.
