Chris Jordan has been tipped to end a frustrating year on a high after earning an unexpected England recall.

Jordan was drafted into the squad for the Test and one-day series against Pakistan in the UAE yesterday following the withdrawal of Steve Finn through injury.

The Sussex bowler missed a large chunk of the summer – including the Ashes – with a side strain suffered on England duty and had subsequently seen the likes of Finn, Mark Wood, Reece Topley and Chris Woakes leapfrog him in the pecking order.

He returned to action in August but was unable to save Sussex from relegation in the Championship while suffering the further blow of losing his England central contract.

Sussex coach Mark Robinson said: “I’m really pleased for Chris. It’s a big boost for him after what has been a difficult season.

“He was obviously disappointed to miss out on the squad initially but this shows he is still very much on England’s radar. He won’t have spent much time with Trevor Bayliss (England coach) so it’s an opportunity to show him what he can do.

“When I spoke to him he was really excited. He deserves it and hopefully he can get himself on the tour to South Africa and then come back to us in March with that drive to succeed.”

England’s bowlers have not enjoyed much success in the first Test so far but Robinson warned against rushing Jordan into action too soon.

He added: “He will need to get himself up to speed so I wouldn’t have thought he’d be an option for the second Test but he could play in the third and then the one-day series.”
