The new County Championship season got off to a disappointing start for Sussex as they were put to the sword by Ben Duckett at Northamptonshire.
Duckett made a career best 177 not out in a Northamptonshire total of 296-2 before bad light brought a premature end to the first day at Wantage Road.
The former England under-19 batsman made the most of a flat wicket after Ben Brown – standing in as captain in the absence of the injured Luke Wright – elected to bowl first.
Brown was made to rue that decision as Duckett put on 130 for the opening wicket with Jake Libby (42) and 123 for the second with Alex Wakely (51).
Steve Magoffin and Danny Briggs were the only bowlers to enjoy any success for Sussex with Magoffin getting one to nip back and hit Libby on the pads after lunch and Briggs trapping Wakely lbw on the sweep in the evening session.
