I’m no expert on football but one thing struck me as I watched Albion suffer play-off heartbreak on Monday night.

The team produced a scintillating performance in the first half as they attempted to overturn a 2-0 deficit from the first leg but despite battering Sheffield Wednesday went in level at 1-1 at the break.

For me that highlighted why they will not be playing in the Premier League next season. When you are competing for such a big prize you need players who can make a difference where it counts.

At Sussex during my captaincy that was Mushtaq Ahmed who provided the X factor in our Championship winning sides. The Seagulls need to find their own Mushy in the form of a striker who can put the ball in the back of the net on a regular basis.

If they can find their own Mushy over the summer then I’m convinced they’ll achieve promotion next season.
