Tymal Mills has the potential to become one of the deadliest Twenty20 bowler’s in world cricket.

That is the belief of Sussex bowling coach Jon Lewis after Mills was called up to the England squad for the first time on Monday.

Mills is set to make his international debut against Sri Lanka at the Rose Bowl next month after catching the eye by helping Sussex win three out of their first four games in the NatWest T20 Blast.

A rare back condition forced the fast bowler to retire from first class cricket last summer and Lewis says being able to focus exclusively on the shortest format of the game will enable him to dominate on the global stage.

Lewis said: “Tymal is in a very different situation to pretty much every other player as he only bowls four overs once or twice a week. That can be hard as there is a lot of pressure on him to perform but it also means he knows exactly what he has got to do every time he plays.

“He is the perfect Twenty20 player. He can dominate in that form of cricket because of the pace he has and because of the skills he has.

“Tymal can go as far as he wants in Twenty20 cricket. He is not the finished article yet but he is is dedicated to his training and if he learns to control his length a bit better and improves his yorker then the sky really is the limit.”

England are only due to play two Twenty20 internationals this summer – against Sri Lanka and Pakistan – and Lewis is excited to see his protege showcase his raw pace on the big stage.

Lewis added: “It’s a one-off game against Sri Lanka so it is a no-brainer to pick him in my opinion. England have been monitoring Tymal for a while now so if he is in the squad then it would be silly not to have a look at him.

“I’m really pleased for him because he has had to work really hard to get to this position. He had some really bad news about his back last summer but has dealt with that and come back strongly.”
