Chris Jordan's recent batting exploits for Sussex have not come as a surprise to me.

The England all-rounder made his maiden first class century against Essex last week and followed it up with a 50 in the win over Gloucestershire in Sussex's last game.

What does surprise me is that it has taken so long for Jordan to really show what he can do with the bat. Yes there have been flashes of what he can do in the past but an average of 23 in first class cricket does not do justice to someone with his talent.

I recognised his ability with the bat when I was coach at Surrey. I even played him as an opener in a couple of games because I felt he had both the technique and temperament to do a job for us there.

His days of opening may be behind him but I have no doubt he be a prolific run scorer for Sussex at No.6 if he continues to work at his batting.

That would be a massive boost for the county and would also surely open up a path back into the England Test side. Chris Woakes earned his second chance after shining with the bat for Worcestershire and has gone on to grab it with both hands and I believe Chris can do the same.
