Former Sussex skipper Chris Adams could be heading to arch rivals Surrey as their new cricket manager.

Surrey will begin interviews for the job next week and Adams, 38, is in the frame.

Adams has made no secret of his desire to move into management, even though he still has a year left on his playing contract with Sussex.

He was on a short-list of two for the post of team manager at Hampshire but the job went instead to Giles White with former England coach Duncan Fletcher appointed on a consultancy basis.

Adams was also interviewed for the job of Sussex’s Chief Executive with the county due to unveil Gus Mackay’s successor in December.

Mackay quit in September to take over as Surrey’s managing director of cricket and he will lead their interview panel along with chairman of cricket Roger Harman and former Surrey fast bowler Martin Bicknell.

Surrey are looking to replace Alan Butcher, who was sacked when they were relegated to the second division.

They have already appointed Graham Thorpe as their batting coach and Mackay has made no secret of his desire to restructure Surrey’s cricket operation.

Neither Adams or Mackay would comment today.
