Luke Wright admits he had a feeling he would make a contribution to England’s successful World Cup campaign with the ball.
The 25-year-old all-rounder played some crucial innings including an unbeaten 45 against West Indies but he had not bowled in the tournament before Sunday’s final when skipper Paul Collingwood turned to him after Wright’s Sussex team-mate Mike Yardy had conceded 21 runs in his third over.
Wright again showed his relish for the high-pressure stage by conceding just five runs in his single over and taking the key wicket of Cameron White, whose stand of 50 with David Hussey had dragged Australia back into contention.
He said: “I hadn’t bowled in the tournament but I just had a feeling for some reason that I would get one in the final."
