Mark Robinson today praised the England selectors for not ignoring players “of a certain age” like Sussex captain Mike Yardy.

Yardy, who celebrates his 30th birthday this year, was one of the unsung heroes of England’s World Twenty20 triumph with his left-arm spin.

He was overlooked by the selectors for three years after playing six one-day internationals and three Twenty20s between 2006-07.

The Sussex cricket manager lobbied for Yardy's inclusion last winter, after he led Sussex to the domestic Twenty20 title, and that of another 30-year-old, Ed Joyce, who was the county’s leading run scorer when they reached the final of the 50 overs competition in 2009.

Robinson said: “I think I have got a decent relationship with (England coach) Andy Flower, we speak on a regular basis and I also talked to (selectors) Geoff Miller and James Whittaker.

“We have built up a bit of a rapport and that has allowed me to make a case for Yards and also Ed Joyce in one-day internationals.

“It also shows that they should not write off that age group of players – the late 20s and early 30s – and they should be praised for that."
