Sussex's World Cup winner Luke Wright says self belief was the key to England’s Twenty20 success.

Wright, Sussex team-mate Mike Yardy and the rest of the squad arrived home today having lifted a major trophy for the first time after Sunday’s win over Australia.

As he recovered from a huge celebration with the rest of his team-mates and the thousands of England fans in Barbados Wright revealed that Paul Collingwood’s squad always felt they could upset the odds.

Wright said: “We genuinely went into every game believing we could win it.

“There was such a strong sense of self belief throughout the squad and I think that is why you saw that at some stage everyone involved put in a performance.”

Yardy admitted the big English support in Barbados had inspired the players.

He said: “It was an emotional day with a massive crowd and huge English contingent which makes a massive difference.

“It felt like a home game and helped make it a very special and proud day for everyone.

“It’s why you play for England because you know the support you are going to get. We are a very proud nation. It’s a special thing to see the crowd and know the support back at home.

“We don’t win World Cups very often. To win one is very special."

Wright and possibly Yardy could be involved in a hectic summer of white-ball cricket for their country which includes 13 one-day internationals against Australia, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

But before then he is looking forward to helping Sussex make a successful defence of their domestic Twenty20 title.

The Sharks open their campaign a fortnight tonight against last year’s beaten finalists Somerset.

He added: “It is going to be great to be back with the Sussex lads after we have enjoyed our success for a few days this week.

“Twenty20 in this country is on a massive high and it would be great to defend our trophy again. It is definitely one of Yards’ and my aims this summer.”
