Sussex's bowlers dragged their side back into contention after they had been dismissed for 176 on the first day of the LV County Championship match against Northamptonshire at Northampton.
Corey Collymore removed opener Niall O'Brien with the new ball, Robin Martin-Jenkins took two wickets in an over, and late strikes by Ollie Rayner and James Anyon, in the last over of the day, reduced Northamptonshire to 117-5 at the end of the first day.
Earlier, Sussex's last six wickets had fallen for just nine runs in 44 balls on a pitch offering both turn and uneven bounce while the ball swung all day under cloudy skies.
Chris Nash returned to form with 72, his highest score of the season, and he put on 60 for the third wicket with skipper Murray Goodwin (30) in the most productive partnership of the day.
Lee Daggett (3-38) and Andrew Hall (3-19) were the home side's best bowlers.
