Monty Panesar took 3-21 and later hit an important 13 not out to steer Sussex to a three-wicket victory against former club Northamptonshire in the 2nd XI Trophy.

Sussex, chasing down a target of 209 at Wellingborough School, got home with almost five overs in hand with Panesar and James Anyon (34) putting on an unbroken 30 for the eighth wicket.

Anyon held his nerve to crack five fours at a run a ball while Panesar’s runs came off 13 deliveries with two fours.

Australian David Lowery hit 38 from 61 balls and shared in a fourth wicket stand of 61 with Ragheb Aga (29), who earlier took 4-27.

Sussex 2nd XI start their second Championship game of the season today when they clash again with Northamptonshire.
