Sussex's batsmen face a mammoth task to avoid a second heavy defeat against Lancashire in the space of a few weeks.

Lancashire piled on the runs to post a first innings total of 590 after resuming on 322-6 this morning before reducing Sussex to 97-4 at the close.

Luke Procter and Gareth Cross added 122 together in the morning session as they both went on the attack against Monty Panesar.

Procter fell 11 short of his century soon after lunch but Cross went on to make 125 before he became one of three victims for Naved Arif.

Sussex began their innings after tea knowing they required 441 just to make Lancashire bat again and their hopes took a blow when they lost both openers in the space of five balls.

Chris Nash was bowled by Farveez Maharoof before Gary Keedy got one to turn to clip the top of Ed Joyce's off stump.

Luke Wells and Ben Brown were then trapped lbw by Keedy and Glenn Chapple respectively to raise the prospect of defeat inside three days.
