Sussex were unable to make the most of a good start on the opening day of their County Championship clash with Nottinghamshire.
Ed Joyce and Chris Nash put on 100 for the first wicket but Notts hit back to dismiss Sussex for 304.
England's Graeme Swann made the initial breakthrough as he trapped Joyce lbw for 38 and also claimed the wicket of international team-mate Matt Prior.
Nash made 93 but missed out on his first century of the season when he became one of three victims for spinner Samit Patel.
Mike Yardy's hopes of a big score on his return to the Championship team were ended when he was caught at slip off Patel for 22 while Luke Wright was one of two victims for England team-mate Stuart Broad.
Rana Naved ensured Sussex claimed a third batting point with an unbeaten 43 and then gave Sussex a much needed boost at the end when he claimed the wicket of Neil Edwards.
