John Glover provided a silver lining to an otherwise frustrating day as Sussex’s game against Oxford University heads for a draw.

Rain meant just 10.4 overs were possible at The Parks yesterday but the wait was worth it for Glover as he claimed his maiden first class wicket in the penultimate over before play was abandoned late in the afternoon.

The 18-year-old fast bowler from Shoreham, who was the Sussex Academy player of the year last season, bowled Richard Coughtrie, who has played five games for Gloucestershire in the County Championship this season, for 22 as he finished with figures of 1-7 from five overs.

It proved to be the only breakthrough of the day as the students progressed from 28-0 overnight to 50-1 at the close in reply to Sussex’s first innings total of 462-7 declared.
