Ed Joyce has been named as Sussex’s acting captain for the County Championship during the absence of Mike Yardy.

Yardy remains unavailable as he continues his battle against depression and Sussex have put no timescale on his return.

Vice-captain Murray Goodwin filled in as skipper when Yardy was absent for the opening month of the season.

Goodwin has captained Sussex in the last six Twenty20 games after Yardy suffered a relapse and will continue to perform the role for the remainder of the season.

No decision has been made on the CB40 captaincy with the next game in that competition more than three weeks away.

Coach Mark Robinson said: “It is not a demotion for Murray. We are just looking to give an opportunity for other people to captain the side.

“Ed has captained for Middlesex and is well respected in the dressing room. It will give him experience of doing the role.”

Joyce, who filled in as captain of Middlesex in 2004 and 2008, will lead the side for the first time in four-day cricket today when Sussex take on Warwickshire in division one at Arundel.
