Ed Joyce's first day as Sussex's acting captain was a disappointing one as Warwickshire took control of their County Championship division one clash at Arundel.

Joyce elected to bat after winning the toss and made a determined 73 on a slow wicket.

But his departure sparked a batting collapse as Sussex, who did not include the injured Matt Prior, lost seven wickets for just 61 runs to go from 139-2 to 200-9.

An 11th wicket stand of 51 between Murray Goodwin and Amjad Khan ensured Sussex earned a second batting point before Amjad was last out with the score 251. Goodwin, who made way for Joyce to take the captaincy, finished unbeaten on 79 from 149 balls.

Warwickshire were left with 16 overs to navigate before the close and did so comfortably with Varun Chopra racing to 40 from 45 balls, including three fours in one over from Khan.
