Sussex batsman Richard Montgomerie continued his good pre-season form against his old county Northamptonshire in today's friendly at Hove.

Coming in at No. 4, Montgomerie followed up his half-century in Tuesday's win over Glamorgan with an unbeaten 80 from 70 deliveries as Sussex scored 286-5 from their 50 overs.

Matt Prior hit 79 and skipper Chris Adams, who opened the innings with Chris Nash, made 55 but Northants reached their target with four wickets in hand and nine balls to spare.

Luke Vintner and Chris Liddle both took two wickets for an inexperienced Sussex attack missing their three Pakistan players as well as James Kirtley and Jason Lewry.

Wicketkeeper Riki Wessels, son of former Sussex batsman Kepler, made an undefeated 82 and Paul Coverdale hit 63 guided Northants to victory.

Wessels made his runs off 76 balls with three sixes and eight fours and put on 90 with Coverdale for the seventh wicket.

The sides meet again at Hove tomorrow (Thursday, 10.45am) in another 50 overs contest.

Five players who have played Test cricket in the last 12 months will line up against Sussex for MCC in the curtain-raiser to the new season at Lord's, starting next Friday.

The attack will be led by Steve Harmison and Matthew Hoggard while left-arm spinner Ashley Giles has also been included.

The side will be captained by Alistair Cook with Owais Shah also in action. Former Sussex coach Peter Moores will be in charge of the MCC team.

Leicestershire seamer Stuart Broad, who made his one-day debut last August, was in the team but has been called into the World Cup squad as replacement for Jon Lewis. Moores has yet to name Broad's replacement.

MCC: Alistair Cook, Will Jefferson, Owais Shah, Nick Compton, Zohab Sharif, Alex Gidman, Steven Davies, Ashley Giles, Matthew Hoggard, Steve Harmison, Graham Onions, AN Other.
