Ben Austin insists spirits are still high at Eastbourne Borough despite the club’s worst run of results for more than a decade.

Borough travel to Mansfield Town tomorrow having taken just two points from their last seven games and boasting a solitary win in 11 Blue Square premier outings.

They also crashed out of the FA Cup at the hands of Ryman premier division outfit Tooting and Mitcham to spark murmurs of discontent among the fans.

Austin admits the last few months have been hard to accept for a club used to almost constant success since Garry Wilson took over as manager ten years ago but believes it is only a matter of time until their fortunes turn around.

The defender said: “At times this year we have played as well, if not better, than last year but we are just not getting results.

“Our performances against Histon and Gateshead were shocking but if you put them aside we haven’t been playing badly and it just shows how fine the margins are.

“In lots of games we have had chances to win and have been hit with a sucker punch or not had the rub of the green. We probably should have more points than we do but at the end of the day you have got to take your chances.

“The spirit is still high, though, as we feel like we can give anybody a game. I am sure at some point it will turn for us.

“Confidence is a massive thing in football. All we need is a goal to go in off somebody’s backside and things will change so we’ve just got to keep plugging away “We are in a situation we didn’t want to be in but it is not disastrous. We know we need to start picking up points but it is not even Christmas yet. It is going to be hard work but I think we are good enough to stay up.”
