Lewes boss Steve Ibbitson has called on referees to give his flair players more protection following a goalless draw at Hampton and Richmond in the FA Trophy.

Winger David Wheeler came in for some harsh treatment particularly, with two Hampton defenders being booked for crude tackles on him.

The Rooks were certainly the better side in the second half but had to settle for a replay at the Dripping Pan on Wednesday.

Ibbitson said: “Over the whole game that is as well as we have played all season.

“I don't usually like complaining about the officials but I thought the referees didn't give our wide players enough protection.

“We like to play with wide players, get the ball down and run at people and with David Wheeler particularly they kicked lumps out of it.

“The referee didn't give him any protection. He booked a player early on but they seemed to be the excuse to let them do anything.

“I have got no problem with a hard game of football, I enjoy a hard game but I thought at times the treatment of David particularly was horrendous.”
