Lewes produced their performance of the season last night to notch a well deserved 2-1 win over Blue Square Bet south league leaders Braintree Town and keep their relegation fears at bay.
Rooks rode the early storm and took a surprise lead in the 28th minute when Jermaine Wright’s free kick got a touch from debut defender Joe Dolan as it bounced awkwardly in front of keeper Nathan McDonald.
Braintree were more urgent after the goal with David Wheeler having to clear a corner off the line although Matt Paine did the same for Town just before half time.
Lewes lost the lead in the 65th minute after a controversial free kick was turned in by Cliff Akurang but that only spurred the Rooks on.
Chris Breach was denied a penalty after his header struck a defender’s arm and Braintree almost went ahead when Glenn Poole’s shot across the face of goal bounced against the far post and into Chris Winterton’s arms.
After Charlie Holness’ shot was scrambled away for a corner in the 80th minute, Wheeler was on hand to smash the ball home from close range to the delight of the Lewes fans behind the goal.
