Lewes interim boss Steve Brown will have to make do without captain Jack Walder for the remainder of the campaign.

Walder, who has only played seven times this season due to injury and suspension, cannot commit himself to the club due to work commitments.

Instead, Gary Elphick will continue as captain, having skippered the side to victory in Brown’s first game in charge against Kingstonian last Saturday.

Brown, though, wants all his experienced players to be leaders as Lewes continue their battle against relegation from Ryman premier.

The Rooks chief said: “Gary will be captain. When you are in the position we are in you are looking for your experienced players to step up to the plate and all be captains.

“Jack hasn’t left the club but he hasn’t been in for a while. When I asked if he wanted to start playing, he said he has too many work commitments.

“He just cannot commit for this season and his work has to come first.”

Striker Leroy Griffiths has left the club and Brown’s squad will be stretched further this weekend by unavailability and suspension.

Nicky Wheeler and Alex Malins are both away while Elliott Romain starts a three-match suspension.

Matt Crabb (two games) and Sam Cole (three) will start bans next weekend after being sent off against Kingstonian.
