Maddie Hinch was the shoot-out hero as Great Britain's women's hockey team won Olympic gold.

Hinch, from West Chiltington, proved the match-winner after Britain had drawn 3-3 with Netherlands at the end of normal time.

The goalkeeper saved three out of four attempts in the shoot-out with the other Netherlands effort hitting a post as Britain triumphed 2-0.

Hinch had also saved a penalty during normal time as well as making a series of fine saves as Britain came under intense pressure from the Netherlands.

Lily Owsley gave Britain an early lead but Netherlands came back to lead 2-1 before Christa Cullen made it 2-2 at half time.

Kitty van Male fired Netherlands in front once again but Nicola White levelled with eight minutes to go to take it to a shoot-out.

Hinch said: “That was a huge team effort. The Dutch are a fantastic side.

"We definitely back ourselves in the shootout. Goalkeeping has its highs and lows. You can be a villain, but you can also be a hero in the moment.

"It helped that the Dutch had a shootout in their semi-final, so that gave me a chance to see what they do but I basically give myself a game plan for each player and I execute that and thankfully it worked. Thankfully the Dutch did what I thought they would do."

Victory meant Britain - also featuring East Grinstead players Laura Unsworth and Sophie Bray - won all eight games on their way to the gold medal.

They were the first British women's team to reach an Olympic hockey final and matched the achievements of the men's team who won gold in 1988.

Hinch added: “3-3, what a great advert for hockey. That’s what we want to do, showcase our sport and I’m so pleased it was a good game.”
