Brighton And Loathed Albion

By Tim Hodges - Put Those Floodlights Out!
No! Eight as in 8 . Not.....oh never mind
When I was a younger man, well a boy really in the late 80’s , I recall the Albion once won three games in row.
In fact I’ll tell you when it was, 1989. Now I can’t quite remember who the Seagulls beat, but I do recall the twin towns were aghast the club had managed such a run of victories.
The team had a chance to then win four on the spin, and probably would all get the chance to sit on Norris McWhirters knee the next day, however on a clear late summer evening Sheffield Wednesday, including Trevor Francis rolled into Hove, and spanked the Albion 4-0 in front of a packed Goldstone.
Today (29th March 2011) the Seagulls have just won their EIGHTH match in a row, some feat or even feet,( a rare moment of blog/column dependent on web editor , humour there) Now news of this amazing achievement is bound to feature on News at Ten or even News 24, surely!
Of course, only, in a not at all, type way. Although, and unless a Southampton or Portsmouth player has dropped his ice cream or bought a new puppy, we might just get a mention on South Today or that show Fred Dinenage does on TVS. How, does he keep going?
It seems no matter what the Albion do or achieve they just don’t get the recognition they deserve.
And when they do get mentioned, Carl Robinson or Mark Bright make disparaging remarks.
Brighton are 13, yes madam a baker’s dozen in points, clear at the top of League 1 with games in hand.
They are soon to move to the one of the most modern and sophisticated stadiums in the world, within a conurbation, where most people I work with, would shave off their moustaches to have some chance of living in.
And, as I currently* work in Croydon, that is not gender specific.
There is little love for Albion outside Sussex, but much within it.
Well done to Gus and the entire squad.
Now as I said, I currently (until Friday) work in Croydon and what a god forsaken place it is. Full of Crystal Palace fans, who always seem to have one eye looking out for Steve Coppell to come gibbering along the Purely Way?
Keith, a work colleague is a Crystal Palace season ticket holder. Keith loves Palace, breaths Palace, eats and drinks Palace, and then goes home to East Grinstead.
Even Keith is Albion curious. I have spotted him quickly closing down the Falmer webcam page more than once . Other pages too, how he gets through the firewall I’ll never know.
I fully expect the super Seagulls to dispatch the minnows such as Rochdale and Sheffield Wednesday, who are their next two opponents. Then on April 12 the Albion play Dagenham and Redbridge in the last ever evening game at the Withers, if the winning trend continues until then, a win on that night would give them 92 points and the championship in more ways than one.
I’ll will sign off by donning my opera cloak and singing ‘its time to say goodbye’ to Dutch Emma, Posh Leanne (she’s from Peterborough) American Betty and Jo.......con te partiro... ladies. Oh and Keith of course.

Successive promotions? Unlikely
Consolidation of a Championship position for future promotion? Nailed on
