Worthing are England junior team champions.

The teenagers will now represent their country in the Home Nations Cup at La Manga on January 7-12.

It is the first time a Sussex club have won a national title at this age level.

The team of captain Peter Tarver-Jones 71 (70), Darren Renwick 74 (75), Jack Ashby 75 (71), Matthew Beech 80 (73), David Tulley 81 (74) and Oliver Beech 95 (83) all performed superby to secure their passage to Spain at Woburn.

To finish top out of an original entry of 3,800 clubs is a tremendous effort.

Tarver-Jones, the Sussex Boys' champion, said: "These were incredible scores.

"After 40 minutes all 12 teams were in and we realised we had won.

"Our special congratulations went to Matthew Beech who held his round together brilliantly as he was eight over for the front nine and kept his head to shoot level par coming back.

"This was a true example of what is needed in this format - never giving up."

Tarver-Jones, 17, shot the only sub-par round of the day and finished one under on 71 at a wet Woburn.

It could have been so different for Worthing had an error in the scores during the regional final at Merrist Wood not been discovered.

The rules stated if two teams are tied for second place it boiled down to the worst score of the six or discarded score.

Tarver-Jones said: "We were devastated as we were tied second with Dunmar and our discarded score was a nett 93, meaning we would not qualify as Dunmar's was 90.

"However, we were saved by a miracle. Jack Ashby is off five and they had him down as an 85 and nett 81, whereas it should have been nett 80. Therefore, we went on to take second alone meaning we qualified for the nationals. The team couldn't believe it."
