Johanna Konta pulled off the best win of her career on home ground at Eastbourne today.

The British No.3 sent Ekaterina Makarova, the Russian fourth seed and world No.8, packing in straight sets in the second round of the Aegon International.

Konta, playing positively throughout, delighted the centre court crowd in her adopted town with a 6-2, 6-4 victory to move into the last 16 of the pre-Wimbledon showpiece.

She now faces Garbine Muguruza, the Spanish 14th seed, who recovered to beat Slovenian qualifier Polona Hercog 5-7, 6-3, 6-0.

British No.1 Heather Watson will be trying to join Konta later today against Ukraine 11th seed Elina Svitolina.

Another of the leading seeds had dropped out due to illness. German Angelique Kerber (6), the runner-up last year, has a virus.

It follows the withdrawal yesterday of top seed and Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova.

The procession continued, on court this time, as defending champion and No.12 seed Madison Keys from America tumbled out 6-2, 6-2 to Belinda Bencic of Switzerland.
