WALLABY Israel Folau admitted his team-mates were left scratching their heads in the aftermath of New Zealand's 34-17 win to lift the Rugby World Cup.

The full-back, who has struggled with a torn ligament in his ankle throughout the tournament, has been nowhere near his best in an indifferent campaign.

Many tipped him as the man to light up the 2015 Rugby World Cup, but he was not able to break free and unleash his skills.

He was outshone by Kurtley Beale - who had to make do with being a bit-part player - and having scored 18 tries in 33 test he wasn't able to cross the line at all in the tournament.

Folau said: "We're still scratching our heads a bit, but that's not taking anything away from what the All Blacks did."

Despite the loss, the squad has won over heaps of fans for the way the squad has conducted itself during the competition.

And the Waratah said there were plenty of positives to take from the tournament.

"For sure," he said.

"I think you learn a lot more when you lose a game and for the guys it's not a good feeling but we've got to soak it all up, learn from this game and move on."
