Seb Rodger has challenged British Athletics to do the right thing after grabbing his last chance to put himself in the frame for the Olympics.

Rodger, from Eastbourne, was controversially left out of the squad for the European Championships despite winning the 400m hurdles title at the British Championships last month.

The 25-year-old instead set off on a gruelling road-trip around Europe in an attempt to achieve the qualifying time for Rio and managed it in sensational fashion yesterday when he clocked 49.29sec in Belgium.

The selectors are due to finalise the British Olympic team today with Rodger keeping his fingers crossed he is not overlooked again.

Rodger said: “The last few weeks have been a real rollercoaster for me so it was such a relief to get the time I needed yesterday. I had almost given up but I didn’t want to think ‘what if?’ by not having one more try and thankfully everything came together.

“I’d rather have got the time with more than a day to spare because it has been very stressful so now I just hope British Athletics does the right thing. I’m not counting my chickens as I know I can’t trust British Athletics but at least I know I’ve done all I can.”

Charlie Grice, from Brighton, and Jade Lally, from Broadbridge Heath, are guaranteed to be in the Olympic team when it is announced today having won the trials and achieved two qualifying standards.

But Rodger and Rob Mullett, from Lewes, are sweating on their places as they only clocked the qualifying time once meaning their selection is down to the discretion of British Athletics.

Rodger added: “I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed but whether I make the team or not I’m happy because I gave it my best shot.”
