Eastbourne Borough's hopes of reaching the FA Cup second round for the first time came to an end as Weymouth gave them a lesson in finishing to win 4-0.

Borough were the better side for the majority of the game but paid the price for not taking their chances as Weymouth completed a flattering victory with a flurry of late goals.

Matt Crabb was twice denied by goalkeeper Jon Stewart and Andy Atkin had an effort cleared off the line before Jefferson Louis turned the game on its head with the opening goal in the 53rd minute.

Stuart Beavon then gave the scoreline a misleading look with three goals in the final nine minutes to bring Borough's 19-match unbeaten run to a shuddering end.

Winger Adam Wilde was not considered fit enough for a place on Borough's bench against his former club meaning Andy Ballard took the final place in the squad.

Jay Lovett dropped to left-back in place of the suspended Neil Jenkins with Pat Harding taking over in right midfield.

Borough started brightly and could have taken the lead in the tenth minute if Scott Ramsay had shown a little more composure.

A quick throw-in from Matt Crabb caught the visitors' defence napping but the former Albion striker's tame effort was easily saved by Jon Stewart.

Crabb forced Stewart into action again soon after following good work by Atkin but the keeper got down well to turn his shot around the post.

At the other end, Lee Hook had to be alert to race off his line and smother an effort from Paolo Vernazza.

The visitors appeared rattled by Borough's positive start and were relieved when a penalty appeal for handball was turned down after Paul Armstrong's shot had hit a defender. Weymouth also had a shout for a spot kick but the referee deemed Lovett's challenge on Beavon was legitimate.

Borough lost their way a little towards the end of the half but came within a whisker of taking the lead on the stroke of half-time.

Crabb, the smallest player on the pitch, rose magnificently to head Ben Austin's cross powerfully downwards but once again Stewart came to Weymouth's rescue with a superb save.

Borough came out of the blocks fastest after the interval but fell behind against the run of play in the 53rd minute.

Armstrong had already wasted a good opening when he dragged his shot well wide while Atkin was denied by a desperate goalline clearance from Neil Young before the Terras took the lead.

Louis had only come off the bench moments earlier when he rose to head home a corner with his first touch.

Borough threw on Allan Tait, Nathan Crabb and Darren Budd as they pushed for an equaliser.

Tait thought he should have had a penalty in the 66th minute when he was sent sprawling in the area but was instead rewarded with a yellow card for diving and the referee waved away another appeal for a spot kick three minutes later when Stewart clattered into the Borough skipper.

Beavon ended Borough's hopes with nine minutes to go. Lovett gave the ball away carelessly and Vernazza's lofted pass found Beavon who shot through Hook's legs.

Beavon completed his hat-trick with two goals in the closing stages. First he combined with Louis before firing a low shot past Hook from 12 yards and then pounced to stab the loose ball home after Hook had spilled Louis' powerful shot.
