Horsham 4 Maidenhead 1.

Horsham captain Kevin Hemsley dedicated a famous FA Cup victory to chairman Frank King and manager John Maggs.

The Hornets reached the second round proper of the world's most famous knockout competition for the first time in their 126-year history.

Four spectacular goals from Lee Carney (two), Nigel Brake and Lee Farrell in front of a 3,379 crowd secured their place in last night's draw.

Horsham estimate they have made £60,000 from their cup run and it could rise to £250,000 should they make it to the third round and seal a glamour tie.

Hemsley said: "All the lads are delighted. We are so pleased to have done this for the fans, the club and ourselves.

"But we are mainly pleased for the chairman and the manager. They have put so much into the club and we know how much it means to them."

King, 76, was present on the two other occasions Hornets reached the first round when they lost at Tommy Lawton's Notts County in 1947 and at home to Don Rogers' Swindon in 1966.

The chairman said: "Saturday was the greatest day in Horsham's history and I shall never forget it. It is mind-boggling.

"I've been been associated with the club for 63 years and this is one of our greatest sides, along with the one of 1947 which was made up of my heroes.

"I'm delighted that Owen Parker and Roy Spriggs - and some of the 1966 team were here to see us make it third time lucky by reaching the second round.

"When I think of how the club almost folded in 1979 it makes it even more significant."

Maggs, 64, who was hired by King seven years ago, said: "It tops everything I've done."

Brake's sensational long-range left-foot screamer provided the turning point seconds before half-time after an edgy first-half performance from both sides.

The former Crawley player said: "My goal was massive boost for us. It gave us a psychological advantage. I've never hit the ball sweeter than that."

Carney's first goal an overhead kick which followed a blocked shot by Simon Austin after a Carl Rook crossed after 62 minutes.

Maidenhead threatend a comeback with a penalty converted by Dwane Lee two minutes later after Hemsley was adjudged to have fouled Manny Williams.

But Carney's second, after a jinking run into the penalty area and cool finish following a one-two with Lewis Taylor, killed off the Conference south visitors seven minutes from time.

He said: "It really lifted us to see so many supporters out there. It was an amazing atmosphere to play in. They were so encouraging."

Substitute Farrell, the England deaf international, completed tbe rout when he scored the fourth in injury time after returning from a long-term knee injury. The only sour moment for Horsham came when Gary Charman, the only Horsham-born player in the squad, was sent off for two bookable offences that could put him out of the second round.

A first-half yellow card was shown for sarcastically clapping a decision by referee Halliday and the red came when he pulled his shirt off while celebrating Carney's second goal with the fans.

He said: "I feel two emotions. I'm ecstatic with the win but gutted over the sending off. I thought it was harsh."

Personal considerations aside, the former Chelsea youth player, 26, is convinced victory could be a launch pad into Conference football for his home town club.

He said: "The potential is massive. We've been quiet for too long. This run shows we are moving forward."

Certainly the size of the crowd and its reaction at the final whistle showed everyone - including Sussex cricket captain Chris Adams who was there watching the action - that Charman might have a point.

And King and Maggs would be popular choices to lead them into the brave new world.
