Chichester edged away from danger and Eastbourne climbed out of the bottom two with important wins in London Three South East.

Chi scored three tries in their 19-8 success over Lewes at Oaklands Park, though Mike Kent, Chris Johnson and Ben Polhill. Jack Smallman converted two.

Lewes, who trailed 14-5 at half-time, reckon their second half effort augurs well for the rest of the season.

They had a couple of near misses for tries before Chris Eden's penalty pulled them back to within six points.

New scrum half Sean Costigan scored Lewes's first-half try after a great break off the back of a scrum by No. 8 Rupert Arbuthnot.

A powerful second-half display helped Eastbourne towards a 17-10 home success over Tonbridge Juddian.

Eastbourne led 7-5 at the break, James Coulthard stepping past a tackle to score and converting himself, but that looked insufficient as they prepared to play into the wind.

Powerful No. 8 Henry Stafford scored a superb try and then set up the clincher for Steve Clark, who produced a jet-heeled finish.

Karl Flynn scored a try hat-trick from No. 8 as leaders Bognor enjoyed another win.

The London Four South East pacesetters came through 49-20 at bottom side Horsham, thanks to a strong forward platform.

Paul Mitchell, Pat Gibbs, George Castleton and young wing Dan Brock all scored tries and Rob Parry added four conversions and two penalties.

Flynn, however, was not totally happy.

He said: "We should have hit the 80 mark. We spent all Thursday evening working on two-on-ones and three-on-twos but then on Saturday we got a few chances like that and kept taking the wrong option.

"I was more disappointed with the defence though. Horsham have got some good backs and threw the ball around but we should have coped with it."

Enterprising Horsham scored three tries once they worked out how to get some possession.

James Young, Adam Harman and Nick Essex scored for a home side who were not afraid to throw the ball around.

Ross Viner added a conversion and Rob Grantham-Hill kicked a penalty.

Hove held on for a 30-27 home win over Beccehamian but they were given quite a scare late on.

The Sussex club raced into a 30-5 half-time lead, then leaked 22 unanswered points in the second period.

Lee Preston grabbed three tries in the first 21 minutes with Ben Sole and Ryan Morlen adding scores.

Alex Sanderson did not have his best day with the boot but a conversion and a penalty helped build a handsome half-time advantage.

Beccs got back within three points with three minutes remaining but could not complete the comeback.

Hastings and Bexhill were 26-0 down after 40 minutes at Bromley.

They opened the second half well with a Kit Claughton try which was goaled by Jimmy Adams but Bromley eventually won 31-7.

East Grinstead came from behind for a 27-8 home win over Uckfield which keeps them top of Sussex One.

Mark Harrison scored two tries and Simon Hawkins, Sam Levett and Darren Arnold finished the job.

Skipper James Smith said: "We were in control once we got a couple of tries on the board."

Heathfield and Waldron are also unbeaten after coming from 3-0 down at the break to win 29-3 at youthful Brighton.

Rob Lawrence (2), Matt Skinner (2) and Adam Tenant scored tries for Heath, whose next match is at home to Grinstead.

Seaford won 35-15 at home to Pulborough and Crawley were 47-8 winners at Burgess Hill.
