Horsham boss John Maggs hailed a wonder goal from Jacob Mingle which helped Hornets seal a 5-1 home victory over Leyton in Ryman premier.

He said: "It was better than the Nigel Brake goal featured on Match of the Day in the FA Cup. It was a screaming volley from 40 yards."

Lee Farrell (two), Simon Austin and Lewis Taylor also scored to boost Hornets' play-off hopes.

New midfielders Mark Hawthorne and Ben Rayner were given late run outs as substitutes.

Hawthorne is a former Hornets player-of-the-year and Torquay pro and Rayner was with Carshalton last season.

A third capture, winger Jason Ward, a former Millwall trainee, has joined and will be included in the squad for tomorrow's fixture at Billericay.

Match-winner Antonio Gonella was praised as he helped Hastings United move out of the relegation zone with a 2-1 win at Margate.

Gonella struck his first senior goal for the club in United's first away victory of the season after a Sam Adams effort for the visitors had been cancelled out by James Pinnock.

New Hastings boss Tom Dolby said: "Antonio was energetic."
