Debut-making outside half Ed Phillips was man-of-the-match as Worthing Raiders maintained their push for National League rugby.

Phillips, 19, was promoted from the second team and benefited from the guidance of Chris Yates alongside him as the Raiders beat visiting Old Albanians 38-13.

They remain four points behind Richmond, who had a 100-7 romp at doomed Thanet Wanderers.

Barnes, however, saw their play-off challenge fade as they lost 42-35 at Shelford.

Director of rugby Ian Davies is assessing every performance in the contexts of preparing for the run-in.

He said: "I thought we played badly and won.

"We have to find way to prevent sides stopping us from playing."

Todd Murphy scored an early try but Worthing trailed 13-11 as half-time approached.

Then Ben McGowan, back from injury, and Phil Williams scored tries and Ben Coulson slotted a conversion to go with two earlier penalties.

Coulson's third penalty after the break opened a 26-13 buffer before Phillips created the try of the game, his clever crossfield kick sending in Will Harris.

Scott MacKenzie rounded things off, Williams this time adding the extras.

The battle for the London Two South title is getting more tense by the week.

Haywards Heath had to battle for a 25-18 win at Old Colfeians.

They then heard they had come within a few feet of taking over the leadership from Jersey on points difference.

Colfs have always been tough opponents for Heath and the Mid-Sussex side trailed 10-0 and 18-17.

Matt Jarrett's penalty put them ahead for the final time and Nick Miller added a try with six minutes to go.

Two tries from Greg Parkes helped Heath wipe out their early deficit. Joe Govett also got over, with Simon Fifield converting from the touchline.

Jersey, held at home to Sidcup in their previous match, were pushed all the way by visitors Maidstone before winning 20-18.

Maidstone outside half Piers Francis pushed a last-minute conversion attempt across the face of the posts.
