Sussex prop Ollie Tomaszczyk will have extra incentive to help his county spring a surprise on Saturday.

The Haywards Heath tight head and Oxford Blue has been nominated for English Counties honours by his county management team.

A selector will check on Tomaszczyk and skipper Simon Gaynor, a No. 8 at Esher, when Sussex host Hampshire at Horsham (3pm) in their final County Plate group fixture.

Sussex were asked to nominate players of National League standard for the representative squad.

Although Tomaszczyk, who played the second half of the season for the London Two South champions, does not come into that category, Sussex suggested he was worth a look.

Team manager Gordon Denslow said: "Simon is our only National League player but they had a look at both him and Ollie when we beat Buckinghamshire at High Wycombe and were reasonably impressed.

"Ollie has been playing for Heath since Sio Mauganai had to go home when his visa ran out and he has done well."

Sussex bring in Lewes scrum half Shane Costigan while Haywards Heath's Nick Miller replaces Adam Phillips of Hove in the threequarter line.

With Dorset and Wiltshire having forfeited the fixture at Lewes last week, Sussex have played together jus once while Hampshire have run up two big wins.

That should make Hampshire favourites, though these end-of-term county games are notoriously hard to predict.

Denslow said: "The indication is that Hampshire are likely to be stronger than we are.

"But we have home advantage and we will go out to win the match."
