Hastings United boss Tony Dolby still believes there is work to be done before his side are sure of Ryman Premier safety despite beating fellow strugglers Hendon 2-1 in a crunch game at the Pilot Field.

Second-half substitute Matt Maclean got the winner on 78 minutes after Rhys Whyborne had cancelled out Glenn Garner’s 12th-minute strike with his second goal in as many games.

United know a point in their final game at Wealdstone will keep them up although a defeat would leave them waiting on other results with Hendon, Boreham Wood and Margate all at risk of filling the final relegation spot.

Dolby said: “There were some good performances as we showed good spirit to come from behind. The important thing was we got what we needed, which was three points.

“But there is still hard work to be done as we don’t want to be relying on other results. We need a point but we will be going out to win at Wealdstone.”

Horsham lost goalkeeper Rob Tolfrey with concussion as they went down 3-0 to play-off chasing AFC Hornchurch.

Tolfrey was clobbered by an opponent as he tried to claim a late corner which fell to Frank Curley to score the Urchins’ third goal. Tony Acheampong went between the posts for the last few minutes.

Simon Parker had earlier put Hornchurch in front after Horsham failed to clear Jim McFarlane’s long throw before Curley got his first, following up to score after Ross Wall’s shot had been blocked.

Injury-ravaged Hornets offered little and boss John Maggs will just be happy to see the end of the season.

He said: “It was a really poor game and based on that performance I can’t see Hornchurch getting through the play-offs.

“We’ve got two games left and it’s just a case of seeing the season out now.

“Hopefully Rob will be okay for the game at Hendon tomorrow.”
