Ady Colwell is still the right man to lead Eastbourne Town forward.

That was the message coming out of the Saffrons after another morale-boosting win.

Since being told to shape up or get the sack, Colwell has guided his men to two wins out of two in Ryman division one south.

They followed a midweek 3-0 bashing of leaders Worthing with a 2-0 victory over a tricky Dulwich Hamlet side.

While this latest win will not end speculation about his future, it will certainly buy Colwell more time to show what he can do.

As the man who led Town out of the County League and to a 13th place finish in their second season in the Ryman League, Colwell has already proved his worth as a manager.

But his close lieutenant, the vastly experienced Micky French, believes Colwell has a lot more to offer providing he is given the opportunity to do so.

French played more than 200 league games for the likes of Brentford, Swindon, Doncaster and Aldershot and has since managed sides in Sussex so he knows it is a results business. But the Eastbourne Town coach also believes Colwell deserves the chance to put a bad start to the season behind him.

French, who provides the experienced head alongside Colwell and his assistant John Purdey, said: “We were given a timescale to turn it round and after back-to-back wins we can only look forward.

“We now play Whitstable (tomorrow). If we could get three points there it would give us a bit of daylight in that mini-league down at the bottom.

“Ady is the young up and coming manager and I am of the old school but we bounce off each other quite well. We believe in each other, which is the main thing, and believe we can turn it around.

“Providing we can get the backing from the committee we can take this club forward.

“It is a league where budgets come into it but we get on with what we have got. We are still a club that has got County League players making the step up and doing quite well.”

One of those is striker Scott McDonald who has now scored three goals in two games since joining from Hailsham Town.

The forward followed up his debut brace against Worthing with the opener against Dulwich in first-half stoppage time, lighting up a pretty uneventful game with a smart finish.

Jamie Salvidge looked as though he had over-hit his centre but Chris Dicker hooked it back across the face of goal for McDonald to slam the ball home.

Eastbourne needed a bit more composure throughout but their confidence was boosted by a second goal on 64 minutes when Dicker’s free-kick from the right eluded everyone to drop in the net.

Dulwich played some neat, passing football but were toothless up front and did not really threaten until the final ten minutes when Town had Ben Putland sent off for a second bookable offence following a tackle on Sanchez Ming, who certainly made the most of it.

Despite back-to-back wins, Colwell is not getting carried away.

He said: “On the evidence of that we have turned a corner but nothing is guaranteed and we have got to be aware of that.

“When you think you have turned a corner football comes around and gives you a kick up the you-know-what.”

Colwell, who has made three seven-day approaches in his search for further additions, seems unflustered by criticism and talk of the sack.

He said: “I like the critics because they make me more determined.

“Ever since I have been here I have looked for year on year improvement. If you look at the Ryman League years we finished just outside the relegation positions in the first year and 13th last year.

“I am looking to beat that. It will be a tall order but that has got to be our target. We have got to maintain the belief that we can do it.”
