Putting aside personal views on the casting of musicals through reality television shows, the current production of, to give it its full title Joseph and His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, provides a most entertaining evening.
The show tells in a simplistic way the familiar story of Joseph, the dreamer, and his rise to power in Egypt.
It is a lively show full of colour, choreography and songs with built in hum-ability. The hard-working cast excel in their multi-roles with costume changes that take place in the blink of an eye.
But for the bulk of the audience, having followed his progress on television, it is the opportunity to see how Craig Chalmers copes with Joseph on stage. He has an engaging presence and sings well, but with a role that does not stretch acting ability we will have to await a stronger vehicle to test that talent.
