HAVE-A-GO heroes detained a man in the aftermath of a "horrific" crash on the A259 at Rottingdean.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "It has emerged that a man believed to be the driver of a car that was in collision with a bus in Rottingdean had sustained an injury before the crash.

"The man was detained by members of the public when he attempted to run off from the scene on the A259 following the collision, involving a Vauxhall Astra and a double decker bus, at 9.06am on Monday (August 5).

"He was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton for treatment. A passenger on board the bus was reported to have suffered a cut lip, but there are currently no other reports of injuries."

The Argus reported earlier today that a car and bus had been involved in a crash leaving both vehicles heavily damaged.

Police have since released further details in a bid to find out more about the incident.

Detective Inspector Dee Wells said: "We are trying to establish the exact circumstances of this incident.

"We know that the grey Astra involved in the collision was at Brighton Marina shortly beforehand, but there is no indication of where the man sustained his injury to the side of his abdomen.

"It is not being treated as life-threatening.

The Argus:

"We would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or has any dash cam footage of the collision or the Astra in the area in the time leading up to it.

"We are also looking to establish where and how the man came by his injury and anyone with information is asked to report it online or call 101 quoting serial 309 of 05/08.

"Alternatively, you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
