Customers just have to tap their bank card or phone on the ticket machine as they board the bus, then tap it again on the “exit reader” as they disembark.

Bus company bosses said the method will make travelling faster and “even more efficient”.

But Argus readers raised concerns about what will happen if passengers forget to Tap Off.

A bus company spokeswoman said: “You will be charged the full single fare to the end of the route, so always remember to tap off in order to pay the correct fare.”

Within the citySAVER area - which stretches from Shoreham to Saltdean and up to Falmer - the maximum fee is £2.60.

But some routes can cost more. For example, the route 12 service between Brighton Station and Birch Road in Eastbourne, where the maximum single fare is £4.70.

A Brighton and Hove Buses spokeswoman said: "If you do forget to tap off and are charged as a result, please contact customer services.
